“The Dior of Hair Dressing”

…Vidal Sassoon
When most women hear this name they think – shampoo. conditioner. hair products.

But before all of the products, there was a man who revolutionized hair styling, cutting and really changed the way women look on the outside. He is known for creating simple, geometric hair cuts that gave women low maintenance hair cuts that didn’t require constant upkeep at a salon. He is the man holding the pair of scissors behind the updated bob cut, also known as the 5 point bob, which changed the look of modern hair.

Despite his fame, Vidal Sassoon came from incredibly humble beginnings. He was raised by his single Jewish mother during the depression and due to circumstances she was forced to put him into an orphanage. They remained very close and when he was wold enough to leave the orphanage she encourage him to pursue hairdressing.
Good thing she did! Throughout the 50′s he began to really find himself and his style. By the 60s his, 5 point cut really defined womens hair of the decade.

In the 1980s Vidal Sassoon sold his name to manufacture hair products. He remained associated with the hair products until 2004.
Although Vidal is no longer associated with the hair product lines which bare his name, his impact on the women’s hair industry is prolific.

A documentary was produced in 2010 about Vidal Sassoon. You can watch interviews with the man himself and learn about his influential career. It is currently on Netflix as a “Watch It Now” film.

Rihanna’s Got Every Look Covered

Hairstyle does so much for ones image. Especially celebrities. Some celebrities keep one hair cut for most of their career and others are constantly changing theirs. There are so many celebrities that when you say their name and image of them pops into your mind and one of the biggest attributes of their look is their hair style.

Rihanna, known for her radio and club hit songs is also making waves with her constantly changing doos. She is not someone who will be known for a specific consistent hair do but more for moments in time. You might catch yourself saying “Remember when Rihana had her hair like……?” Her hair is a hot topic within the beauty world, with color, length and her styles constantly changing. Her stylist(s) must be having so much fun! Every album she releases has a whole-new-her!
Her ability to be a chameleon is amazing. She seems to be able to wear any look easily. We’ve seen her as a long hair brunette as well as short cuts and blonde hair. She’s even sported shockingly bright red hair. From up glamorous up dos to short edgy haircuts and sweeping voluminous rocker hair, she’s really done it all.
Her wide variety of hair styles bring to mind many other celebrities who have much more signature hair styles.
Her short edgy hair reminds me of Kelis, another sexy singer.

Her longer locks are reminiscent of Oprah, Tina Turner and Goldie Hawn and many others.

A question I can’t help but ask- is how much of that is her actual grown hair? What do you think? To me it looks like a very complex combination of weaves, wigs and her natural hair.

Let us know what you think!

Cancer in the Media

Film and Television are both incredibly useful tools to influence the popular culture. However is it a two way street. Viewers want to relate to the stories they watch on TV or at the movie theater so Film and Television are a reflection of our own human experience as well.

Starting in the 90′s more films began to have cancer and oncology as a topic in their story lines. As we moved into the early 2000′s this trend continued. Soap operas, sci-fi show( ex: Battle Star Galactic),  Abc’s series Desperate House wives, and many others have main characters who have been diagnosed with a variety of different types of cancer.

I think this trend is not only interesting but mass media can be a really helpful tool. It allows conversations to happen about fictional characters with cancer, which can help both adults and children cope with dealing with cancer in their own lives. Media brings awareness in a form that is easy to connect to and encourages people to be sympathetic to those fighting cancer.

The Different Types of Alopecia

Most commonly hair loss is thought of being on the head as it is the most obvious place for hair loss. However there are many other kinds of Alopecia that occur on other parts of the body.Alopecia Areata is what we hear about most of the time. Alopecia Areata is most frequently referencing hair loss in round patches on the head. However, this is hair loss can occur anywhere on the body.

Alopecia Totalis is complete or total loss of hair on the scalp.

Alopecia Universalis is the complete loss of hair on the body and the scalp

Androgenetic Alopecia is considered hereditary hair loss. The hair on the scalp often turns almost transparent before falling out. Male pattern baldness is another name for androgenetic alopecia. This type of alopecia can also effect women.

There are many kinds of hairloss, a few specific kinds of alopecia include:

Alopecia Barbae is specific to men only. It is the loss of the beard hair area.

Alopecia Mucinosa is hair loss that accompanied by scaly skin patches.

Anagen Effluvium is the type of hairloss caused by chemotherapy and other medications. This kind of patchy hairloss is temporary. When the medications stop the hair loss will grows back.

Nowhere Hair – a quirky story for children

Unlike Alopecia Areata or Androgenic Alopecia, hair loss from cancer signifies illness that is potentially fatal and is not to be taken lightly. Chemotherapy drugs make a person sick and can cause hair loss while fighting cancer. Many people see baldness (especially when it comes to women) and think “cancer” or “sick” regardless if the woman is fighting cancer, or simply has a form or Alopecia.
This can be incredibly hard for a woman. Hard not just because she is fighting cancer, and hard not because she is loosing her hair but also difficult to explain to the ones around you what you are experiencing and why. Especially children.

Meet Sue Glader, a woman, a mother, an author and a breast cancer survivor.

With the help of illustrator, Edith Buenen, the quirky children’s story No Where Hair was created. Glader was diagnosed with breast cancer right after her son’s first birthday and was inspired to find a way for adults and parents to communicate to their children about cancer and how it is effecting them.

This story is about a little girl who is seeking for the answer of why her mother has lost her hair. It shows that chemotherapy may cause a mother to loose her hair, make her tired and even sometimes cranky, but not her sense of style, humor, happiness or love for her child.

” It does the heavy lifting, without being heavy.
It addresses a child’s guilt, fear, sadness and anxiety with a light touch. ”

Guts, Glory and Alopecia Areata

The requirements on the Miss America’s Website are as follows:

  • Be between the ages of 17 and 24.
  • Be a United States citizen.
  • Meet residency requirements for competing in a certain town or state.
  • Meet character criteria as set forth by the Miss America Organization.
  • Be in reasonably good health to meet the job requirements.
  • And although it doesn’t say here explicitly that you must be good looking, being attractive is definitely a given.
We live a world where attractiveness has some social standards. These standards are obviously subjective but there are some items that seem pretty universal- A general appearance of youth and health, which includes flawless skin, clear eyes and lustrous thick hair.
How is it that a woman suffering from Alopecia Areata became a Miss America Contestant!?

Allow me to introduce Kayla Martell, Miss Delware 2010!

Kayla Martell started loosing her hair at age 10 and by the age of 13 was completely bald. She grew up in Delaware and was a Miss American fan long before she began loosing her hair. Her mother took her to watch her first Miss American Pageant at age 4. Regardless of her hair loss, she won her first pageant at 13 yrs old and didn’t stop there. Unlike many who loose their hair, Kayla chose to go wig-less. She attended many of her pageants without a wig and spends her personal life, comfortable in her on skin.
She now can be seen sporting a blonde wig as after a few years of not winning Miss Delaware, she decided to see if the public would respond differently to her with a blonde wig. Although she is completely confident and comfortable without a wig she acknowledges that bald women are not something seen everyday, and she wants to remain approachable to everyone. Wearing a wig also allows her to address her Alopecia on her own terms rather than having the first question be- why are you bald and are you ok?

Her confidence is inspirational. Here is a video and article from ABC News featuring this amazing woman.

Cap Constructions for Wigs

A Variety of Cap Constructions for Wigs

There are many decisions that need to be made when buying a wig. Besides finding a
style you love and choosing a particular color, wig cap construction is a major factor not
only in the cost of the wig, but also how natural it will appear and how comfortable it will
be to wear.

At e-Wigs we try to show the cap construction along with the wig views whenever
a wig manufacturer has supplied an image. In addition, e-wigs will mention the cap
construction when describing a wig.

Wig cap construction is still evolving. However, there are a number of cap constructions
that you will find mentioned on our site. Click here to see an in depth article and learn more about wig cap constructions.

Traditional or Standard Wefted Cap:

The traditional, sometimes referred to as classic or standard cap, is a wefted construction where synthetic hair is machine or hand sewn into strips of material.

Becky by Estetica Designs provides a standard wefted, pure stretch lightweight, breathable cap wig construction with thin resilient dual elastic sides.

Capless or Open Cap:

One variation on the standard wefted cap construction is the capless wig cap. The “capless” is not really “capless” (obviously), but the wefts are less dense and have a bit more space between them. This provides a lighter weight cap with better air circulation. Many women who wear wigs for medial reasons prefer a capless construction.

Gwen by Tony of Beverly features their capless Harp construction with an open weft providing superior breath-ability for more all day comfort.
Elle by Envy Wigs offers a capless construction for maximum comfort and coolness.

Monofilament Top (Mono-top):

Monofilament cap construction is the preferred choice for those who want the most natural look while wearing a wig. Wig manufacturers originally developed the monofilament cap for women who have experienced significant hair loss due to chemotherapy, alopecia, or other medical reasons and have sensitive scalps. Sometimes mono-top wigs are referred to as “medical wigs.” There are a number of variations in monofilament design construction depending upon the wig manufacturer. Since many hairstyles don’t require 100% monofilament technology to achieve a stunning look, or only require them at certain locations in the wig’s cap, monofilament cap construction may differ in some minor ways from style to style.
Sparkle by
Raquel Welch
offers a Memory cap construction with stretch lace machine wefted sides and back and a full crown monofilament area.

Petite Paige by
Envy with its “stretch cap technology” has a hand tied monofilament part line.

Double Monofilament Top:

For folks with sensitive scalps, the knots on the hair fibers when they are individually tied into the caps of mono-top wigs can be a source of irritation. The double monofilament top wig has an extra layer of monofilament to shield the scalp from these knots.
Emily by Amore features a double monofiament cap with a hand tied top construction and machine wefting along the sides and back.

100% Hand-tied Cap:

This is the premier of all wig cap construction types. Quality 100% hand tied cap construction imitates most successfully the natural movement of real hair. The entire cap, front, crown, sides and back, is hand tied, not just a specific area as is found on many monofilament cap constructions.
Applause by Raquel Welch a 100% hand knotted human hair short layered cut.

Lace Front Caps:

Wig manufacturers developed lace front wigs so customers could wear their hair off the face. It is the only cap construction that permits a natural looking hairline.
Kate by Jon Renau offering a lace front and large mono top allowing multi-directional parting.

Being more knowledgeable about cap construction should help you choose a wig that will be comfortable and better suited to your needs. Have a great time shopping at our unique Internet boutique, e-Wigs.com.
